The year is 2024 and Sharfmans is pleased to introduce the 39th in the Worcester Ornament Series:
Spags
To those from this area, Spags needs no introduction. To those from afar, Spags is the retail phenomenon that you’ve heard about!
Anthony Borgatti, Jr., known as “Spag” opened his discount store in 1936 for tires and batteries. Over the years, the merchandise evolved to include anything and everything under the sun: Hardware, Housewares, Sporting Goods, Food, and more. Spags had it all!
Customers were encouraged to bring their own shopping bags or use empty display boxes to carry out their purchases; “No Bags at Spags”. Furthermore, “cash was king” at Spags until the late 1990’s. It was truly a unique shopping experience, well ahead of its time.
Each Spring, customers flocked to Spags for their free tomato seedling. This act of generosity encouraged customers to plant gardens of their own and became an annual tradition.
Over the years, Spags on Rte. 9 in Shrewsbury became a local institution. People travelled from all over to experience this economical, fun, and unique way of shopping. The symbol of Spag in his cowboy hat and khaki shirt resonated with shoppers and welcomed all for 70 years and is still in the hearts and minds of all who shopped there.
